I just had the best diner! The food was darn good tonight at Holmes (breaded chicken with a side of marinated cauliflower and fine-dining quality cream puffs). But what made it great was reading the local paper. First, I read an editorial written by our dean. I started thinking about how many people had read his words today and what impact he had made. Even if he informed 1 person who has some decision-making responsibility, the editorial made a difference…pretty impressive.
Then I went to the letters-to-the-editor. I glanced at the first one and realized it sounded familiar. I jumped to the end and read the author’s name---Naomi! A few students glanced at me as I chuckled.
Then I started reading the second letter-to-the-editor and realized it too sounded familiar---it was the letter Elias wrote. The students sitting around me would have good reason to think I was ‘smoking something’ because I started laughing and smiling (maybe they thought the cream puffs were that good).
Even if you both informed only 1 person who has some decision-making responsibility, the letters made a difference…very impressive.

Thank you Matt, that was very encouraging and the project was a huge milestone for me. I received great feedback from the piece and gave me confidence to feel that I could make my voice heard. As little as it might have seemed for some, I was a little shocked to have seen it in the paper.. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteHey Mr. Q and Naomi, I'd like to read your letters! Can you post them when you get a chance? thanks, Laura
ReplyDeleteAfter reading these same articles I find myself picking up a paper just to see if any of our other classmates have been printed. What a great assignment. My wife cut my lettor to the editor out and put it on the fridge. Im looking forward to seeing what topics people post here in the future.
ReplyDeleteLaura, I will post mine up tomorrow, because I think I saved it on my work laptop. But again, thank you for your interest. :)
