To learn or to earn!?

A recent survey revealed that recent higher school graduates are thinking about more of earning more money than broadening their minds. The finding caught my attention since we have discussed the purpose of higher education in the last class. When asking the graduates the reason for going to college, 80 percent of them emphasized better job opportunities. A slightly smaller share strongly agreed with the statement, "to reach their goals in life." The next most popular reason was " to earn more."
69 percent of the graduates strongly agreed the going to college is to broaden their mind and learn more, and only 51 percent of them gave strongly agree to the "social experience of going to college." I personally think that college education also offers opportunities to individuals to discover themselves. So I'm surprised that the research agency didn't include similar questions.
Here is another interesting number. According to the study, 56 percent of students said they wished they had received more help from their school guidance counselors because of tightening budgets. I just wondered if there is anyplace that a college can step in. I'm thinking about creating a acquisition partnership with high schools. Our admission counselors or recruiters can walk into high school classrooms and interact with students. They not only bring the marketing message to high school students, but we also provide them with general guidelines for college education.
